The Fermeuse - Port Kirwan Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1983. It has a present membership of 18 well equipped, well trained firefighters. The Fire Department is located on the main road in Fermeuse. The building itself consists of a meeting room, a kitchen / office and a garage to house 3 fire trucks. The fire hall is equipped with an emergency van, a 5000 gallon pumper, a 2000 gallon tanker, the Jaws of Life and a pager system that alerts the firemen the minute an emergency call comes in. The Fermeuse - Port Kirwan Fire Department primarily covers the area from Cappahayden to Fermeuse, taking in the communities of Renews, Kingman's Cove and Port Kirwan. They also assist the Ferryland Volunteer Fire Department to fight fires in their area, if the need arises.
