Fermeuse Fish Plant
The fish plant in Fermeuse was built by former Premier Frank D. Moores' father, Silas Moores, of Harbour Grace. The plant was opened in 1952.
The building is concrete, with a combination of concrete block and poured concrete. It is mostly a two-story building, the newest part built in 1986 has one floor with a high ceiling. The plant measures 90,500 cm long by 31,800 cm wide.
The pier which is attached to the fish plant wharf measures approximately 26 meters long by 7.2 meters wide. The wharf is of crib and span construction. The deck is constructed of reinforced concrete. The water frontage at the plant is 81,730 cm.
Freezing capacity consists of one Blast Freezer of 11.5 metric tons per day. Eight plate freezers with 32 metric tons at an eight hour cycle. There is a cold storage capacity of 570 metric tons.
The Plant is provided with a metered gravity fresh water supply. The total daily ice making capacity of the plant is 45 metric tons. This capacity is accomplished using two "North Star" ice machines.
At peak times the plant employed up to 350 people from Fermeuse and surrounding areas, it continued to operate seasonally until 1992 when the Cod Moratorium was put into place which closed the plant down. At one time the fish plant was the heart of the community, most of the people living in the area had either worked at the plant or were related to someone who did work there. Presently, there is some salt fish being processed in the plant.
