Fishermen's Berthing Wharf (Inside Sheep's Head)

The fishermen's berthing wharf, located inside Sheep's Head, measures approximately 45.7 metres long by 6.0 meters wide. The wharf is constructed of 300 mm diameter creosoted timber piles, spaced approximately 3.0 metres on center, and braced with 100 mm by 200 mm creosoted timbers. The 75 mm thick wooden plank deck (replaced 1999) is supported by 300 mm by 300 mm creosoted pile caps and 150 mm by 250 mm untreated wooden joists spaced at 600 mm on center. The fending system is constructed of 100 mm by 150 mm sawn timber spaced at 600 mm on center. A 200 mm by 200 mm sawn timber wheel guard has been provided.

 

Lumbley's Cove Wharf (Behind Plant)

The Lumbley's Cove Wharf is located adjacent to the fish plant. It is known as the 'Fishermen's Basin'. This wharf was built in two stages - the first in 1965, measuring 6.0 meters wide and 45.7 ,meters long. This section is attached to the main fish plant wharf. A couple of decades later an extension was added giving the total length at 91.4 meters. The wharf is of solid wood construction, utilizing 250 mm by 250 mm creosoted timbers. A 150 mm thick reinforced concrete deck has been placed over the crib ballast. The fendering system is constructed of 100 mm by 150 mm untreated hardwood spaced at 600 mm on center. The 150 mm by 150 mm wheel guards are fastened to a 100 mm by 250 mm coping. Ladders have also been added.

Both the wharf inside Sheep's Head and in Lumbley's Cove are maintained by the Fermeuse Harbour Authority and are kept in excellent condition.

 

Port Kirwan

The Port Kirwan wharf facility consists of a marginal section (presumed to be owned by the Local Fisherman's Committee) which measures approximately 36 meters long by 6 meters wide. It is constructed of 250 mm diameter creosoted timber piles spaced at 2.5 meters on center both ways. These piles are capped with 200 mm by 250 mm creosoted beams and decked with a reinforced concrete surface. The marginal section is connected to the main wharf which was constructed in two stages, each measuring approximately 6 meters wide and 45.7 meters in length.

Located next to the wharf is a small boat slipway. It measures approximately 38 meters long by 6 meters wide. The haul-up section is of crib and span construction. Cribs are approximately 3 meters long by 6 meters wide constructed of 200 mm by 200 mm creosoted cribwork. The span section measures 3.2 meters in length. The storage are is constructed on 150 mm by 200 mm creosoted beams spaced at 1200 mm on center secured to an old concrete building foundation. The slipway is decked with 75 mm thick plank, with 100 mm by 100 mm hardwood runners spaced at 900 mm on center. A 100 mm by 150 mm sawn timber wheel guard had been provided on both sides of the haul out section.

A public gear storage facility has also been constructed in Port Kirwan. The two-story wood frame structure measures 24.3 meters long by 9.3 meters wide.

 

Kingman's Cove

A small boat haul up facility is located in Kingman's Cove. The slipway has a haul up section measuring 30 meters long by 4.6 meters wide and a storage are measuring 14.4 meters long by 12.2 meters wide. The slipway is constructed of 150 mm by 150 mm of creosoted timber, decked at the boat storage area with 50 mm by 150 mm of untreated planks and 100 mm by 150 mm hardwood runners spaced at 1200 mm on center. The deck along the haul up section is constructed of 100 mm by 150 mm hardwood runners spaced at 1200 mm on center, and secured to the creosoted beams.

A public gear storage facility has also been constructed in Kingman's Cove. The two-story wood frame structure was built in the 1980's and measures 19 meters long by 12 meters wide.
